Desert Feet Tour first ran into the Karntimarta Wanderers back in 2010 when we were running concerts and workshops at Warralong. BHP Billiton had funded the visit which included a full set of band equipment that we donated to the school. When we retuned next, Willy Kickett had struck up deal with the school, he taught kids to use the instruments during the day and in return had access to the library so he could jam. He formed his own band with Anthony Ginga, Leroy Larry, Denzel Orange and some of the students he taught like Derrick Walker and together they wrote several really cool songs. When we returned Willy and his band got up and blew us away with a really well rehearsed and solid set of songs. We all loved it so much we offered them a spot on the festival we were running in Hedland the next day and so the Karntimarta Wanderers played their first festival in front of 500 screaming teenagers. The event was a dream come true for the guys, as Willy said all he had ever wanted was to play at a big concerts. But Desert Feet Tour saw the potential and took it one further, we recorded this EP live at Warralong and this time we left them a 4 channel mixing desk. When we came back the next time Willy and his band had recorded over 20 songs.
In August 2013 they appeared on the Nindji Nindji stage in front of over 1000 people and soon after that we visited them at Warralong again where we filmed the clip for Midnight. We hope to see Willy and the boys go on to bigger and better events so be sure to watch this space to find out more.
Here is an interview we did with some of the crew from the Karntimarta Wanderers in 2011.
