For musicians living in remote areas there does not exist a lot of musical opportunities. Especially when you live in a community of about 200 people or less in the Central Desert. There are no venues to gig at, no audiences to hear you, no studios to record you sounds, out here these guys cannot buy a new guitar string, look on the internet to learn songs, upload their track to myspace or book a gig at the nearest pub. The bands you see here have been truly isolated, but that is also, what makes them so special, original, authentic and individual.
When we began to discover the incredible calibre of the music out here, we realised that it’s not just the level of talent that is impressive, it’s the importance of it culturally that sets it apart. We realised that this mixture of ancient language and contemporary music made it a significant Australian inheritance and a important contribution to world music.
Without a demo, a video clip, a website, a few songs on iTunes, social media and some contacts in the industry, its pretty hard to generate any exposure for yourself unless you’re willing to move to the city. In these isolated circumstances, some bands are not even able to register their music with APRA, this means they have no access to royalties or performance fees even if these opportunities occurred. That is where DFR comes in. We want to be able to publish, promote, produce and offer these opportunities to remote bands in a culturally sensitive way that will not impact on what has made their music so unique, without destroying the isolation that makes it so original and unpresuming?. Desert Feet Records is bringing it to you.
These artists are only a small taste of what is out there. We have decided to work with these musicians first simply because we had the opportunity to spend the most time with them, touring, playing, recording and shooting footage. However those opportunity’s have also helped to forge some of their songs into a more recordable and commercial arrangements. We hope you enjoy them as much as we have.
